The campus police officer was shot multiple times on Thursday night after responding to a report of a disturbance at the prestigious school’s Cambridge campus.
Local news reports said on Friday that gunfire and explosions were heard in the nearby city of Watertown, during the hunt for the killer of the university police officer.
At least one suspect is reported to be under arrest as state police and FBI agents continued the investigation.
Another person may have been shot during the manhunt, local media said.
Authorities have yet made no immediate link between the MIT shooting and the Boston Marathon bombings which killed at least three people on Monday.
The United States has experienced several mass killings over the past six months including an incident on December 14, 2012, when a 20-year-old man, identified as Adam Lanza, killed twenty children and six adults before pointing the gun at himself at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
An average of 87 are killed and 183 injured each day in the US as a result of gun violence, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Centers for Disease Control.
The year 2012 was a record-setting year for gun sales in the country. About 4.5 million firearms are sold annually in the US.
